Employees are responsible for the maintenance and operation of the town's water system, which transports water from the Town's treatment plant to meter on each customer's system. Other duties include making new taps, meter reading, system replacements and extension inspections as well as the Town's backflow program.

The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water awarded the Town of Culpeper Water Treatment Plant with its 2017 Excellence in Waterworks Operations Performance Award following a year-long analysis of data from the plant.

Each year, through Virginia’s Optimization Program, the Health Department recognizes drinking water treatment plants that perform above and beyond minimum standards by optimizing and operating treatment processes efficiently and effectively. The optimization program encourage waterworks to provide water with a quality that exceeds minimum regulatory standards and to operate water systems in an exemplary manner.
